In April the whole hillside smells of zagara, lemon blossom, and the villa takes its name from it. Villa Zagara stands in the hamlet of Lone, 250 metres above Amalfi, among terraces of lemons, with the Lattari mountains behind and the sea in front. The mule path to the harbour begins at the gate.
The house is an old farmhouse expanded over two centuries: thick stone walls, a vaulted kitchen, an outdoor dining arbour. Five bedrooms spread across two wings, three with bathrooms ensuite, two sharing. The furniture is old and honest: ironwork beds, painted wardrobes, linen from the village.
A saltwater pool sits on the lowest terrace, with loungers and a view that stretches along the coast to Capri on clear days. Above it, a pergola, a wood oven and an outdoor kitchen. Lemons, figs and herbs are yours to pick, and the owners will cook you a farmhouse supper on request.
It is a walker’s villa. You can reach Amalfi on foot in about forty minutes along the old Via Maestra dei Villaggi, return by taxi or bus, and take the valley trail to the Paper Museum. The road to the house is narrow; a car is useful but not essential, and we meet guests at the village for the last stretch.

Reception hours: Caretaker meets guests at arrival; host on call 08:00–21:00. Minimum check-in age: 25 years. Please tell the host your expected arrival time if you will arrive late.

Optional extras
A car is useful. The last 400 metres are a narrow lane with parking for two cars at the villa. Taxis from Amalfi cost about €25.
Yes. The Via Maestra dei Villaggi and trails to the Valle delle Ferriere and Pontone start at the gate. We have a folder of walking routes and can pack lunches.
Dogs are welcome (two maximum, €12 per night each). Please keep them off the beds and out of the pool.
The saltwater pool is not heated; it is warm from June to September.

The pool, the garden and the hills kept all eight children occupied for ten days. We cooked in the outdoor kitchen, picked lemons, played boules. The caretaker was a gem and arranged a cooking class that the kids still talk about.

The location is gorgeous, but getting there with luggage was harder than expected and the air-conditioning in two bedrooms is weak. The hosts were kind and helped by carrying cases from the car.

We came with our dog and our boots. The trail to the Valle delle Ferriere starts at the door and the views from the pool are better than any postcard. The kitchen was well equipped.

A real old farmhouse. Hot water took a while and the Wi-Fi was weak in the east wing, but the charm and the hospitality made it a memorable stay. The wood oven pizza was the highlight.

A real farmhouse, cool in August, with good beds and big shutters. We walked down to Amalfi every other morning and took a taxi back with the groceries. The pool is a treat after a long walk.
