Pergola Bianca is the kind of hotel people write about in postcards: eighteen rooms, a terrace under a white pergola, and a family who live on the ground floor and know every guest by name. It has been run by the Cinque sisters since 1998, and the breakfast table is still set by their mother, Donata, who will insist you try the lemon sponge.
The rooms are simple and calm, with tiled floors, cotton bedding and enough cupboard space for a week. Sea-view rooms have little balconies; garden rooms face the lemon trees and cost less. Nothing is grand, everything works, and the beds are very good.
The terrace has a small pool, sunbeds and an honesty bar that closes when the last guest goes up. The hotel sits on Via Pasitea, the lane that links the upper town with the beach: you can reach the water in ten minutes and the bus in two, and you are close enough to the shops that a forgotten sun hat is a five-minute problem.
Small, well-behaved dogs stay for a modest fee, and the staff can arrange baby cots, early breakfasts for ferry mornings and picnics for the Path of the Gods.

Donata's breakfast alone is a reason to go back. The room was simple, spotless and quiet, and the whole family made us feel like regulars by day two. They booked us a taxi to the airport at 5am without charging for the favour.

A calm room, lovely bedding and a very comfortable bed. We ate dinner at La Cambusa on their recommendation and it was excellent. Staff helped carry bags up the lane without being asked.

We have stayed in much pricier places on this coast. Here the beds were better, the staff far friendlier and the location handy for both the bus and the beach. The terrace at sunset with a glass of local white is hard to beat.

Charming hotel with kind owners and a great breakfast. Our superior room had a real sea view. The steps up from Via Pasitea with a heavy suitcase were harder than expected, and the water pressure in our shower was low.

We have six spaces behind the hotel at €30 per night, first come first served. Otherwise there are public garages on Via Pasitea at about €40 per day.
