Vietri sul Mare has been making ceramics since the Middle Ages, and the hotel is dressed in them. The facade is a patchwork of hand-painted tiles in lemon, cobalt and green; inside, every room has its own wall panel painted by a different local artist, so you can ask for the fish room, the lemon room or the one with the blue peacock. We wanted a place that feels like a gallery you can sleep in.
Rooms are bright and spare, with white linen, oak floors, terrazzo bathrooms and good reading lamps, so the colour comes from the art and the view. Deluxe rooms face the sea; the Ceramic Suite has an entire tiled wall, a rain shower for two and a terrace the size of a small boat. Family Quads sleep four, with bunk beds that the staff say are the most requested in the building.
The roof holds a small plunge pool, a bar and an unobstructed view across the Gulf of Salerno. Breakfast is served downstairs in the Osteria dell’Argilla, where the owner’s mother makes the cakes, and the restaurant opens for dinner on weekends with menus built around the Cetara fish market and Tramonti’s mushrooms and cheeses. Once a week we host a workshop where guests paint their own tile; the best ones end up on the corridor walls.
Corso Umberto I, the main street, is full of ceramic shops, bars and bakeries. The train station and the buses are a short walk away, so you can reach Salerno in ten minutes, Amalfi by bus in 40 and Naples by train in under an hour. If you prefer to walk, the Marina di Vietri is a 600-metre descent through the old town, and the way back is good exercise before dessert.

Ceramics everywhere, charming staff and a terrace that invites you to stay. The location is ideal for exploring the coast by bus. Very good breakfast. We will come back without hesitation.

We used Vietri as our base for the Amalfi Coast and liked it. Trains are close, staff gave great tips and the workshop was a delight. The Family Quad was roomy for four, but the bunk beds are short for teenagers and breakfast could be a little more varied.

An original, well-kept hotel with clean rooms and an excellent breakfast. A few too many steps from the station and the street is noisy in the morning. Otherwise a unique, creative atmosphere.

Great concept and well run. The rooftop plunge pool is tiny but a lifesaver on hot days. Our Deluxe room was bright and quiet. A few more electrical sockets by the bed would be nice. Walkable to the station and to dinner.

The art and the staff are lovely and breakfast was great. Our street-facing room was noisy with scooters until late and the AC rattled. We changed rooms and the new one was better. A good choice for a short stay.

Thanks Greg. We have since added double glazing on the street side and serviced the air-conditioning units.

We stayed four nights and fell head over heels for the place. The rooms are bright, the art is fantastic and the staff do everything to make you feel at home. The rooftop pool was perfect after a long day.

Take the SITA bus along the Amalfi Coast road (about 40 minutes to Amalfi), or the seasonal ferry from Salerno. Trains to Salerno take ten minutes and the hotel is a short walk from the station.
The plunge pool is heated from April to October and open 09:00–20:00. It is small, about 3 × 6 metres, and made for a cooling dip.
There is a small garage 200 metres from the hotel, €18 per night, on request. Many guests arrive by train.
