For six hundred years Amalfi made paper, and Palazzo della Carta is built on that trade: a stone house of three storeys where rags were pulped, pressed and hung to dry in a long, airy loft. Today the loft is the breakfast room, with its original wooden louvres and a long table dressed in linen the colour of unbleached paper.
The hotel has twenty-six rooms, each with a vaulted ceiling, a hand-painted tile floor and furniture picked from Salerno’s antique dealers. Some look over the cathedral square, some over the lemon-tree courtyard, and the top-floor ones have a slice of sea above the harbour roofs.
The roof terrace is the place for an aperitivo: a bar, a few loungers and a view of the harbour, the cathedral campanile and the cliffs on both sides. Down in the courtyard, a small vaulted bar serves coffee all day and light dinners in the evening.
You are in the centre, a short walk from the ferry pier, the beach at Marina Grande and the Paper Museum in the valley. Streets are pedestrian, so luggage comes by porter-cart from the nearest road. Staff speak five languages, and the concierge will happily point you towards a quiet trattoria or an early bus.

Breakfast in the old drying loft is a joy. Our room had a high vaulted ceiling and handmade tiles, and the porter had our suitcases up in minutes. The staff found us a lovely trattoria that does not appear in guidebooks.

Response from Amalfi Palazzi
Eleanor, thank you. Our porter, Gennaro, says it was a pleasure and that the trattoria sends greetings.

Excellent hotel with a historic setting. Peak-season prices are high for what is a comfortable but not luxurious room. Staff were warm and helpful, and we would happily return in the shoulder season.

We stayed in the Family Suite with our two children (6 and 9). The kids loved the roof terrace and the staff brought them paper for drawing. A great base for the coast, though the lift is small for pushchairs.

Gorgeous building with vaulted rooms and tile floors. Our Classic Courtyard room was smaller than the photos suggested and the bathroom a little tight, but the staff were wonderful and breakfast was a feast.

We stayed in Rome, Florence, Amalfi and Venice. Palazzo della Carta won hands down: charm, kindness, comfort and a breakfast we still talk about months later.

The Cabin Single is tiny but perfect for one: a quiet nook, a desk, good Wi-Fi. I came for the Christmas lights, felt looked after from the first minute and ate every breakfast in the old drying loft.
