Furore’s terraces are called “sospesi”, suspended: narrow shelves of vines and lemons stacked up a cliff that drops straight to the sea. Podere Sospeso is the Amato family’s farm on one of them, a stone house with eight rooms, a cellar cut into the rock and a long table under an olive-wood pergola.
Rooms are modest, clean and a little rustic: whitewashed vaults, iron beds, hand-painted tiles, a window onto vines or sea. Garden rooms have their own door to the terraces; the Terrace Suite looks straight over the Gulf of Salerno. There is no television and nobody misses it.
Dinners are served at the long table by arrangement: pasta rolled that afternoon, rabbit from the next farm, lemons in everything, and wine from the cellar. In September and October guests are invited to pick grapes at dawn and press them in the old way. There are also cooking classes in the farmhouse kitchen and tastings in the cellar.
The farm runs on solar panels, composts, makes its own olive oil and limoncello and charges electric cars. It is a good place for walkers: the Path of the Gods starts nine kilometres away, and the Furore fjord, with its tiny beach, is down a lane of steps to the sea.

We almost cancelled the farm dinner to go to a famous restaurant. Thank goodness we did not. Handmade pasta, rabbit, lemon cake and wine from the cellar with the family talking us through every glass. Rooms were simple, clean and warm.

Joanna, thank you. Nonna Elvira was delighted that you finished her cake.

The setting, the family and the food are excellent. Without a car it takes some planning to reach beaches and the bus is infrequent. Bring walking shoes and a sense of time.

Do not expect a hotel. The shower has modest water pressure and the stairs are steep, but the welcome is warm and the dinner is memorable. Value for money was excellent compared with the coast.

Our room had a faint damp smell and the Wi-Fi was patchy. The owners offered a different room and a free bottle of wine, which we appreciated. Breakfast and views were great.

Peter, thank you for flagging this. We have dehumidifiers in all vaulted rooms and a stronger Wi-Fi mesh now installed.

We stayed five nights during the harvest. Waking up at dawn to pick grapes, the cellar tasting afterwards, the generosity of the family. It is rustic and real. We cried when we left.

A working farm, not a theme park. We picked grapes at dawn, tasted wine in the cellar and fell asleep to the sound of crickets. Rooms are simple but spotless. Ask for the Terrace Suite.

Send another messageDinner is by arrangement, from Thursday to Sunday in shoulder season and nightly in summer. Please reserve at least a day ahead; we cook what the farm and the boat bring.
Yes, but the terraces are steep and water tanks are open. Children must be supervised. We keep a basket of toys and offer cooking for kids in the afternoon.
The SITA bus stops 280 metres away from Positano, Amalfi and Sorrento. We can also meet you at Marina di Praia ferry stop with the farm’s pick-up truck.
From mid-September to mid-October guests are welcome to pick grapes at dawn; a tasting lunch follows.
