Palazzo Lunaria was a silk merchant’s house before it was a hotel, and it still behaves like one: tall shuttered doors, cool majolica floors, and rooms that open one above the other so every balcony looks over the roof of the house below to the water. Positano’s main bell tower is at eye level from the terrace.
The twenty-two rooms were redone in lime-washed plaster, pale oak and linen the colour of sea foam. The sea-view rooms are the reason to come, but the courtyard rooms are the quiet ones: you hear the lemon tree, not the scooters. The Penthouse has its own plunge pool and a dining table made for long lunches.
Down on the lowest level there is a small spa (hammam, treatment rooms, a heated pool under a vaulted ceiling) and above it the terrace restaurant, where the kitchen cooks what the boats and the Agerola dairies bring in that morning. Breakfast is long, slow and included in most rates.
The hotel is a short walk from the beach and the ferry, though the way back up is steep; porters meet every arrival at the road and carry the luggage. A concierge desk handles boats to Capri and the Li Galli islets, driver transfers from Naples and tables at the places that never have one.

We treated ourselves to three nights in the Penthouse. The plunge pool at sunrise and the long table for lunch with friends were wonderful, and the host learned our coffee orders. Service at the pool bar was slow on our busiest day.

Linen, light, the evening aperitivo: all lovely. The caveats: scooters on the road above until midnight on weekends, and our courtyard room felt cut off from the view we were paying for. Book a sea-view room if you can stretch to it.

The hotel is beautiful, but in the hottest week of August the air-conditioning in our courtyard room barely worked, the pool was packed by ten and we slept badly for three nights. They moved us on the fourth day, which felt late at this price.

We were nervous about a five-star with children of seven and ten. The family suite has two proper bedrooms, the pool has a shallow end, and the kitchen made pasta at six o'clock without blinking. Nobody made us feel like we were a problem.

We split two Junior Suites for a fortieth birthday week. Hotel staff organised a boat to Capri, a cooking lesson and a birthday dinner on the terrace with candles. Every plan landed exactly as promised.
