Praiano does not shout. It is the quiet stretch between Positano and Amalfi where the road bends, the cliffs turn pink at dusk and the evening belongs to whoever has the best terrace. Gavitella Alta has it: a long, stepped deck facing due west, with low sofas, linen cushions and a bar that stays open till the last guest wanders up.
The hotel is a converted fishing family’s house plus two newer wings, with nineteen rooms in sand, chalk and indigo. There are hand-glazed tiles on the floors, rattan chairs on the balconies and wide shutters that you can leave open all night. The Suite with Hot Tub is the signature: a private terrace, a stone tub with a sea view and a daybed under a reed canopy.
Mornings start with yoga on the roof terrace (included), then a long breakfast of ricotta, figs and tomato-rubbed bread. A small pool catches the afternoon sun; for the sea, a path leads down to Marina di Praia in about twenty minutes and a boat taxi runs from there to Positano and Amalfi.
The restaurant serves a short menu built around the day’s catch and the owner’s grandmother’s sauces. Staff come from Praiano and the next village, speak four languages between them and give good directions. It is a hotel for people who like to take the time.

Optional extras
A signposted path from the hotel reaches the beach in about 20 minutes (240 steps). The way back takes closer to thirty. We also run a taxi to the beach on request.
Group yoga is included every morning at 8:00 (April to October) on the roof terrace, weather permitting. Private classes can be booked as an extra.
No lift. Rooms are between 5 and 40 steps from the entrance. Tell us if you have trouble with stairs and we will put you on the lowest level.
Yes, we work with a Praiano skipper for boat taxis, half-day cruises and sunset rides.

I came alone for a long weekend of writing and swimming. The roof yoga class was a gift and the staff gave me a table with the best light. The Wi-Fi in my room was weak, so I worked on the terrace.

The terrace at golden hour is worth the flight alone. We took the hot-tub suite for three nights and barely left. Staff arranged a boat taxi to Positano and a table at La Brace without effort. Excellent value for this coast.

We stayed in a road-side room and the buses and scooters on Via Capriglione woke us early. Everything else, breakfast, welcome, view, was excellent. Ask for the sea side.

Good bed, great views, welcoming staff. A few things could be fresher: a loose tile in the shower and a stained cushion. Service more than made up for it. Dinner was a highlight.
