Late-night Lisbon: who’s still cooking after midnight

Late-night Lisbon: who’s still cooking after midnight

Lisbon eats late. Dinner rarely starts before nine, the bars of Bairro Alto and Cais do Sodré fill up around midnight, and by two in the morning half the city is hungry again. For years the answer was a sad sandwich from a petrol station. Not anymore.

We stayed up far later than is healthy to find the kitchens that deliver properly after midnight: real food, cooked to order, arriving hot. Four of them stood out, and between them they cover almost every late-night craving.

The night shift

Za’atar Corner in Arroios cooks until three in the morning, and its falafel wrap might be the best thing you can eat at that hour. The falafel is fried to order, green with herbs inside, and wrapped with pickles, tahini and chilli. If you are sharing, the chicken shawarma plate with garlic sauce and fries is a full meal for two tired people.

Kimchi Kantina only opens at five in the afternoon and also runs until three. Its Korean fried chicken is double-fried so the crust stays crunchy all the way to your door, glazed in sweet-spicy yangnyeom or soy garlic. Add tteokbokki with cheese if the night calls for something soft and spicy.

Wok Estrela in Campo de Ourique never closes at all. Twenty-four hours a day, seven days a week, the wok is on and the chow mein is coming. It is our pick for the very late, very hungry order, and delivery is free over €15.

El Carril Tacos in Bairro Alto keeps cooking until two. Al pastor tacos with pineapple and salsa verde are the obvious choice; the burrito is the sensible one if you also want lunch tomorrow.

Ordering after midnight

Late orders work exactly like daytime ones, but a few habits make the night smoother for you and for the courier riding through empty streets.

  • Use the Open now filter: kitchens that have closed disappear from the list.
  • Check the arrival time on the card; it already includes the kitchen’s current wait.
  • Add a clear note about your door, because buzzers are easy to miss at night.
  • Order water with anything spicy. Your morning self will thank you.

Fatia Quente near Cais do Sodré also serves New York slices until two, and Dobra Smash sends out smashed burgers until one. Between them, there is no excuse for going to bed hungry anywhere in the city.

A word on timing. Kitchens are busiest between eleven and one, when the bars empty and everyone has the same idea. If you can, order a little before midnight, or after one when the rush has passed. The arrival time on every card updates with the kitchen’s real wait, so you always know what you are signing up for.

One last thing: late-night couriers are some of the most dedicated people in Lisbon. They ride the cobbles in the dark so you do not have to. Say thank you at the door.
