Plant-based Lisbon: dishes that need no apology

Plant-based Lisbon: dishes that need no apology

Portuguese cooking loves its pork, its salt cod and its sardines, so plant-based eating in Lisbon used to mean a side salad and a polite smile. That has changed fast. Some of the most exciting kitchens on Pinch now cook entirely without meat, and others have vegan dishes so good that nobody at the table notices.

We asked our team for the plant-based dishes they order for themselves, not out of duty but because they genuinely crave them. Three kitchens came up again and again.

Three kitchens worth knowing

Verde Vivo in Arroios is fully vegan, and it does not cook like it has something to prove. The buddha bowl is a generous mix of roasted squash, chickpeas, red cabbage, avocado and quinoa with a lemon and tahini dressing. The cauliflower steak with almond romesco and herby lentils is the dish that converts sceptics. In the morning, the tofu scramble toast is served until noon.

Horta Bowl in Avenidas Novas grows its herbs in crates on the terrace. Its quinoa bowl is vegan and gluten-free, and the gazpacho is the best cold soup in the city when the weather is warm. Horta delivers only nearby to keep everything crisp, so if you live further away, pick it up on your way home.

Poke Onda by the river is not a vegan kitchen, but its tofu poke is one of its best sellers. Crispy marinated tofu on sushi rice or greens, with four toppings and a sauce of your choice. Finish with the açaí bowl, which is vegan too.

Finding plant-based food on Pinch

Every dish on Pinch carries clear diet labels, chosen by the kitchen and checked by us. You do not need to read every description or call the restaurant to ask.

  • Use the Vegan or Vegetarian filter on the restaurant list to see kitchens with at least one matching dish.
  • Look for the leaf badge on each dish inside a menu.
  • Check the allergen list too: many plant-based dishes use nuts, sesame or soy.
  • Browse the Vegan cuisine page for kitchens that cook without meat altogether.

Beyond these three, there is plenty to find. Masala Mouraria makes a vegetable biryani and crisp samosas that are both vegan. Lótus Thai Kitchen will cook its pad thai with tofu, and its mango sticky rice contains no dairy at all. Tasca Azulejo’s peixinhos da horta, green beans in a light batter, are the Portuguese ancestor of tempura and happen to be vegan.

A note on ordering for a mixed table. Plant-based dishes travel as well as any other, and most of these kitchens also cook for meat eaters, so one order can keep everyone happy. Add a vegan dessert and nobody will ask where the cheese went.

Plant-based food in Lisbon no longer needs an apology or an explanation. It just needs a good kitchen, and the city now has plenty of those.
