Here is how the year feels on the ground, written by people who live here through all of it.

November to March: quiet, cool and partly closed

Daytime temperatures sit around 10 to 15°C, the sea is cold, and many small hotels and beach restaurants close for the winter. Ferries run a reduced timetable, and weather cancels them often. What you get in return is empty lanes, lemon trees in fruit, woodsmoke and local prices. Amalfi, Sorrento, Naples and Ischia stay open all year, and the thermal hotels of Ischia are at their best in winter. Bring a coat, plan around the bus timetable and book somewhere with heating.

April and May: the coast wakes up

This is the first shoulder season. Hotels reopen after Easter, wisteria hangs over the stairs in Ravello, and the walking is ideal at 18 to 24°C. The sea is still too cold for most people, but beach clubs begin to open in May. Easter week and the late-April holidays are busy, so book early or choose the weeks in between.

June: the sweet spot

Long days, warm water by the end of the month, the full ferry timetable and prices that have not yet reached their summer peak. If you can choose only one month, it is probably June, especially its first two weeks. The summer concert season in Ravello gets going, and the evenings are long enough for a swim before dinner.

July and August: peak

Hot (often over 30°C), crowded and expensive. The sea is at its warmest, in the mid-20s, and the coast is at its most theatrical, but the road is slow and the buses are full. Ferragosto, on 15 August, is the busiest day of the year. If you must come now, stay somewhere with a pool or beach access, take boats instead of buses and do your walking before 10:00.

September and early October: our favourite

The sea has had all summer to warm up, and the crowds thin from the second week of September. Days are warm, evenings are soft, prices fall back towards shoulder rates and everything is still open. Beach clubs close around the middle of October and the ferries begin to wind down from late October, so go before then if you want a swim and a boat trip.

What the seasons mean for the price

On most Getaway stays, nightly rates follow the same pattern. Using April, May and October as the base:

November to March is about 25% below the base rate.

June to September is about 25% above it.

The peak, 25 July to 25 August, is about 45% above.

Friday and Saturday nights add roughly 10%, and stays of seven nights or more take 8% off.

In practice, a room that costs €300 a night in mid-May costs about €435 in the middle of August and €225 in January. Our travel insights page shows the average for each town, so you can see where your budget goes furthest.

Our pick

The first fortnight of June, or the last week of September. Either gives you warm swimming, open restaurants, a full ferry timetable and a room at a price that feels fair. For a quiet, romantic trip with fewer swimmers, go in late April or in October and pack a light jacket for the evenings.

What the coast really feels like from November to October, what is open, and how the seasons move the price of a room.

[273
274,281,280
post-3306","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-tips","tag-amalfi-coast","tag-booking-tips","tag-seasons
["GET
