Fifteen minutes around the block tells you very little. Use this checklist to make the most of the time, and ask the dealer for a longer drive that includes roads you use every day.

Before you start the engine

Walk around the car. Look for uneven panel gaps, mismatched paint and signs of repair, and check that the VIN on the dash matches the paperwork.

Check the tires. Even tread and matching brands are good signs. Uneven wear can point to alignment or suspension problems.

Sit in every seat. Adjust the driver’s seat and wheel until you can see clearly and reach the controls. If you carry kids or gear, try the car seats, the rear seat and the trunk.

Look for warning lights. They should glow briefly at start-up and then go out. Anything that stays on is a question for the dealer.

Try the technology. Pair your phone, test the touchscreen for lag, and check the cameras and parking sensors.

While you are parked

Test the climate control. Run the A/C on full and listen for odd noises. In Los Angeles, an air conditioner that struggles is a daily irritation.

Operate everything. Windows, locks, mirrors, seat adjusters, sunroof, wipers and lights all deserve a try.

Listen on a cold start. Ask for the car to be cold if you can. Rattles, ticking or smoke on start-up deserve attention.

On the road

Feel the steering. The car should track straight with light hands. Pulling, vibration or play are red flags.

Brake firmly when it is safe to. The car should stop in a straight line, without pulsing or squealing.

Merge onto a freeway. Acceleration should feel confident, and the transmission should shift smoothly. A freeway on-ramp is the real-world test.

Drive in stop-and-go traffic. Check low-speed smoothness and visibility, and for hybrids and EVs, how the regenerative braking feels.

Find a rough road and a hill. Listen for clunks or creaks over bumps and speed humps, and see how the car climbs and holds speed.

You are not being difficult. You are doing the one inspection that matters most: the one with you behind the wheel.

When you are back

Park it. Try a parallel spot or a tight parking structure. Visibility, turning circle and camera quality matter every single day.

Check under the car and the hood. Look for fresh drips or smells after the drive, and glance at the dash for any new lights.

Make the most of the time

Ask for at least 30 minutes. Many dealers will agree, and some offer longer or overnight drives for serious buyers.

Turn the radio off. You are listening for the car, not the playlist.

Bring a second opinion. A friend who rides along notices things you will miss, especially rear-seat comfort and cabin noise.

Take notes and photos. After three or four test drives, the cars blur together.

Drive it like your life. Take your commute, your steepest hill and your parking garage, not only the dealer’s suggested loop.

After the drive

Give yourself time before deciding. Compare your notes, review the vehicle history report and, for used cars, arrange an independent inspection. If something felt off, ask the dealer about it directly; a good one will either fix it or be honest about it. You can book a test drive from any Driveway listing, and choosing a time slot takes under a minute.

A test drive is your best chance to learn how a car fits your life.
