The value on offer can vary by thousands of dollars depending on the car’s condition, the market and how you approach the conversation. Here is what drives the number and how to give yourself the best shot at a fair price.

What determines trade-in value

Year, make, model and trim. Popular, reliable models with desirable options hold their value best.

Mileage. Lower is better, and crossing round-number thresholds such as 60,000 or 100,000 miles can matter.

Condition. Paint, interior wear, tires, brakes and any warning lights. The dealer is estimating what it will cost to make the car ready to sell.

History. Accident reports, title status and the number of owners all count.

Local demand. A fuel-efficient hybrid, a family SUV or a well-kept truck can be easier to resell in Southern California than a niche model, and that affects what a dealer will pay.

Trade-in versus selling privately

Selling privately usually brings a higher price, but it also means photographing the car, answering messages, meeting strangers, handling the paperwork and, in California, making sure the smog and registration requirements are met. A trade-in is faster and simpler. In some states a trade-in also lowers the sales tax on your purchase, so ask the dealer how it is handled here. Instant-offer services sit in between: quick, but not always the highest.

Negotiate the price of the car you are buying first. Then talk about the car you are selling. Mixing the two hides the real numbers.

Prepare the car without overspending

Clean it properly. A thorough wash, vacuum and interior wipe-down costs little and makes a visible difference. Remove your personal items.

Fix the cheap stuff. Replace a burned-out bulb, top up fluids and fix small cosmetic items that are inexpensive. Skip major repairs, because a dealer can usually do them for less than you can.

Gather the paperwork. Bring the registration, both keys, the owner’s manual and your service records. If you still owe money, bring a payoff statement from your lender. If you own the car outright, have the title (the pink slip) ready.

Get several appraisals. Collect at least three: an online estimate, an instant-offer quote and an in-person appraisal. The spread tells you what is realistic.

If you owe more than the car is worth

This is called negative equity, and it is common, especially on longer loans. The shortfall does not vanish. It gets rolled into your new loan, which raises the new payment and the interest you pay. If you are in this position, consider waiting, paying down the balance, or choosing a less expensive replacement so you do not compound the problem.

How the Driveway estimate works

Our trade-in form asks for the year, make, model, mileage, condition and ZIP code, then returns a range rather than a single number. The range is a guide based on the details you enter and on comparable cars, and it becomes a firm offer only after an in-person inspection. If the inspection finds something the form could not know about, a good dealer will walk you through the adjustment line by line.

Questions to ask the dealer

How did you arrive at this number, and what condition did you assume?

Is the offer good for a specific number of days or miles?

Does the offer change if I do not buy a car from you?

How will the payoff on my loan be handled, and when?

Treat any estimate as a starting point. The most effective things you can do are compare, ask questions and keep the two transactions separate.

Trade-in offers can differ by thousands of dollars.
