A tyre choice is not a preference; it is a team&#8217;s best reading of track temperature, race length, the abrasiveness of the surface and the way its own rider uses the front on entry. Get it right and the bike is still competitive in the closing laps. Get it wrong and the race becomes an exercise in managing a problem that cannot be fixed until it ends.<\/p>\n<h2>What a compound actually promises<\/h2>\n<p>A softer compound offers more grip sooner and gives it back sooner. A harder one asks the rider to wait, then holds its shape for longer. Neither is better in the abstract, because the question is never simply how much grip exists \u2014 it is how much grip exists at the moment the race is decided. A tyre that is perfect for five laps and finished by fifteen has answered the wrong question.<\/p>\n<p>Temperature complicates all of it. A compound that works beautifully in the afternoon can refuse to switch on in cooler evening air, and a tyre that is behaving in the opening laps can move past its window when the track heats up and never come back. This is why the same choice can look inspired on Saturday and indefensible on Sunday with nothing changed but the sky.<\/p>\n<h2>Front and rear are separate arguments<\/h2>\n<p>It is easy to treat tyre choice as a single decision, but the front and the rear are solving different problems. The front carries the braking and the initial part of the turn, and its failure mode is a loss of confidence long before it is a loss of grip: a rider who cannot trust the front stops carrying entry speed and the lap time falls away quietly. The rear carries drive and edge grip, and its failure mode is loud \u2014 spinning on exit, movement under acceleration, a bike that has to be short-shifted to stay in a straight line.<\/p>\n<p>A rider hard on the brakes and gentle on the throttle can afford a softer rear than the field. One who turns the bike with the throttle wears the rear differently and often prefers the harder option even when the timing sheets suggest otherwise. This is why a paddock consensus on compound is unusual and rarely lasts.<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p>The right tyre is not the one that is fastest on lap two. It is the one that still lets a rider attack on the lap that decides the result.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<h2>Degradation has a shape<\/h2>\n<p>Tyres do not simply get worse. They get worse in a pattern, and the pattern is what teams are really trying to predict. Some compounds fall away steadily, which is manageable because the rider can plan around a known rate of loss. Others hold a plateau and then drop, which is far harder: the pace looks sustainable right up to the point where it is not, and by then the strategic options have closed.<\/p>\n<p>Surface condition matters more than it appears. A newly resurfaced circuit can be smooth and unusually hard on rubber at the same time, because the grip that makes the lap fast is also the grip that generates heat. An older, more abrasive surface can be gentler on a compound simply because nobody can push hard enough to overheat it.<\/p>\n<h2>How to read the opening laps<\/h2>\n<p>The first three laps tell you about warm-up, not about the choice. Watch instead for the moment the leading group&#8217;s lap times stop improving, then compare who holds their pace and who begins to defend. A rider who was fast early and starts taking a wider line on exit is protecting a rear that has moved past its window.
